INTRODUCTION

This artwork aims to salute three outstanding examples of creative individuals
who have aimed for excellence.

PANEL 1 - A PLAN : WALTER BURLEY GRIFFIN (Architect - City of Canberra)

PANEL 2 - A CONSTRUCTION PERIOD
JØRN UTZON (Architect - Sydney Opera House)

PANEL 3* - A COMING OF AGE CELEBRATION :
                                'THE SPIRIT OF BENNELONG'/PIERROT/YOO
(A Spirit of reconnection)
*PANEL 3 features key elements
from a specially written story
(featured within inside the artwork) titled:
'STORY FOR AUSTRALIA'

Each of the (3) panels that make up the work tells a story and collectively there is a story. So, I would prefer to call this work a Trilogy rather than a Triptych. There are in fact many stories in this work some of which are touched on in these notes.

The Trilogy firstly addresses the memory of 'three wise harlequins' i.e. Bennelong, Nanberry, and Boorong whose gravesite near the nature strip at *25 Watson Street Putney in Sydney (across the Parramatta River from the Sydney Olympic Park site) has in more recent times been identified for "attention...to the steps needed to honour their lives".

Secondly, on a national level the panels address the journey of Australia from its childhood into that of an independent youth nation.

Thirdly on an international scale the three wise harlequins might be perceived to be America, Denmark and Australia? Elements of the flags of these countries can be seen in each panel.
But in any artwork everything is open to the viewer's individual interpretation.

After spending a fair amount of time with Utzon, Burley Griffin and Bennelong/Pierrot/YOO
I find some questions keep coming to me.

Why did we treat them the way we did? Why so often do we treat those people, who have the eyes to see, the ears to hear and the mouth to speak so poorly? What is it in us that seeks to dim that light?

“The first step in solving a problem is to face up to the fact that there is a problem."
